Rest

Rio Celeste is one of the many wonderful hideaways available in Costa Rica. A zone with an important indigenous heritage, amazing natural resources and a river that due to volcanic influences literally goes by its name. I share this week a few lines about rest as I have the privilege to put them in practice as I spend this holiday season with my family here.

Go on Vacation! – I've met colleagues that like to accumulate their vacation for long periods after which they also go for important periods of time, just because. I have slightly different perspective. I try to take all my available vacation every year in two or three different periods. Here the important thing is not so much how do you take your vacation. It is probably more important to ask: are you taking it? Do not get fooled by confusing hard work with no vacation at all. Even if from time to time you need to stay away from vacation to focus on a project. Do not make it a permanent habit. Otherwise you’ll remember that you are a human in need of rest the hard way. 

Make sure you deserve it – I mention this one because I try to make the same question to myself from time to time. It is really cool to go away from work knowing that you are performing well in what you are paid to do. If some time the answer is not necessarily positive, then make sure that your vacation pays you well by recharging your batteries for a better come back. 

Plan ahead – open spaces do not pop up in the agenda magically. There is space for the things that actually interest you and for which you open spaces. If you do not manage your agenda, other people will do it according to their interests. So make sure your family and your vacation have the spots they deserve in it. This means that you’ll need to make plans at least a couple of months in advance, so you match your family’s availability with the demands from the projects you are currently leading. 

Share the news – we live in a heavily connected world. Many team members and colleagues depend on the work you do, the plans you make, the code you develop. Communicate early the holiday seasons customary in your country which you plan to take, as well as the holidays. Make sure to let your stakeholders know your plans and how they can proceed in your absence. You will need to ask a few of them for their agreement with your plans. Others will do just fine with a kind notice. This will save you some bad moments once you come back. 

One more thing – if you are a project manager or a manager you will definitely want to ponder all vacation time and holiday from the team members you are leading. Especially if you are dealing with demanding restrictions of time or workload. It is easy to make dumb schedules by allocating every team member 52 weeks of work availability per year. That may be true for payment purposes not for effective time.

El Descanso

Río Celeste es una de las muchas buenas escapadas disponibles en costa Rica. Una zona con una importante herencia indígena, impresionantes recursos naturales y un río que debido a influencia volcánica literalmente va por su nombre. Esta semana comparto algunas pocas líneas acerca del descanso mientras gozo del privilegio de ponerlas en práctica mientras paso esta temporada de descanso con mi familia por acá.

Vaya de Vacaciones! – He conocido colegas que gustan de acumular sus vacaciones durante largos periodos para luego irse también por periodos prolongados, solo porque así les gusta. Yo tengo una perspectiva un tanto diferente. Trato de tomar todas mis vacaciones disponibles cada año en dos ó tres períodos. Aquí lo importante no es tanto cómo le guste tomarlas. Es más importante preguntar: ¿ toma sus vacaciones? No se deje llevar confundiendo trabajo duro con no tomar nada de vacaciones. Aun si de tiempo en tiempo necesita prescindir de las vacaciones para enfocarse en un proyecto. No haga de esto un hábito permanente. De otra manera recordara que usted es un humano con necesidad de descanso de la manera difícil. 

Asegúrese de que lo merece – menciono esto porque de hecho trato de hacerme la pregunta a mí mismo de tiempo en tiempo. Es satisfactorio poder alejarse de su trabajo sabiendo que usted se ha desempeñado bien en aquello que le pagan para hacer. Si en algún momento la respuesta a esta pregunta no necesariamente es positiva, entonces saque el máximo rédito a sus vacaciones recargando sus baterías para una mejora a su regreso. 

Planee oportunamente – los espacios libres no surgen en la agenda mágicamente. Hay espacio para las cosas que a uno le interesan y para las que abre esos espacios. Si usted no maneja su agenda, otras personas lo van a hacer según sus intereses. Así que asegúrese que su familia y sus vacaciones tienen los lugares que les corresponden. Esto significa que hay que hacer planes con al menos un par de meses de antelación, de manera que usted pueda calzar la disponibilidad de su familia con las demandas de los proyectos que lidera. 

Comparta las noticias – vivimos en un mundo altamente conectado. Muchos miembros de equipo y colegas dependen del trabajo que usted realiza, los planes que lleva a cabo, el código que desarrolla. Comunique tempranamente las temporadas de vacaciones acostumbradas en su país y que usted piense tomar, así como los días feriados. Asegúrese de hacerle saber sus planes a su audiencia y cómo pueden ellos proceder mientras usted no está (asigne un reemplazo que lidie con lo más urgente). A algunos pocos de ellos deberá consultarles si están de acuerdo con sus planes. Para otros será suficiente con solo una amable noticia. Esto le evitara algunos momentos incomodos al regresar. 

Una cosa más – Si usted es un gerente de proyectos o un gerente, usted definitivamente querrá ponderar todo el tiempo de vacaciones y feriados de los miembros del equipo que lidera. Especialmente si le toca lidiar con restricciones demandantes de tiempo o de carga de trabajo. Es muy fácil hacer calendarizaciones tontas asignando a cada miembro del equipo 52 semanas de disponibilidad por año. Esto tal vez sea cierto para propósitos de pago pero definitivamente no para tiempo efectivo.
